Millions dream of life abroad. Few make the move.

An estimated 110 million American adults have considered moving overseas.

42% of U.S. adults considered or planned a move abroad. Fewer than 2% of Americans are estimated to live abroad. These figures use different populations and dates; open Sources and methodology for details.

42%: The February 2025 Harris Poll (opens in a new tab) surveyed 2,131 U.S. adults on February 13–15, 2025. The figure includes people who had at least slightly considered moving out of the U.S. in the next two years, including those planning to move.

<2%: AARO’s estimate (opens in a new tab) puts about 5.5 million U.S. citizens overseas in 2023. The Census Bureau’s 2024 estimate (opens in a new tab) puts the U.S. resident population above 340 million. The rough comparison is 5.5 million divided by 340 million plus 5.5 million, or about 1.6%.

The poll measures intentions among U.S. adults. AARO estimates citizens of all ages abroad; the Census total includes U.S. residents regardless of citizenship. The populations, methods, and dates differ. These are separate measures, not a conversion rate.
